Welcome to Mac's Revolutionary War Family History
Preface
The Revolutionary War section starts out with basic information from years of hard work & research by my 85-year-old mother-Virginia, who was interested in genealogy. She began a quest, to research both sides of our family's history, through Roots Web-now part of Ancestry.com & other genealogical resources.
Family bibles, photographs, stories handed down from generation-to-generation, & a never-ending quest for information, from friends, relatives & strangers, provided a wealth of material. What resulted were massive bound volumes of genealogy, for both sides of the family.
Her one frustration is, that hardly any of our younger generations are interested in such things. Indeed, if one starts to read from the beginning of any one of the massive volumes, it's sort of like reading the bible & seeing who begot whom. It's boring reading, if you don't know where to look!
My interest however, lies on the military service of family members. My first experience in that area, came about, when I was but five years old. (See WWI, An American Doughboy). Since then, my aim has been to take the military information she has collected and put it into storyline form.
This first section, titled Revolutionary War, is a newly discovered topic for me. It wasn't
until my mother had completed the majority of her genealogical work, that I found out that we had
relatives in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. This era holds particular interest for her, in that
it is the history of her mother's ancestors, the Gellers.
We start the Revolutionary War section with the story of George Phillip Geller. It is the furthest back that mother can trace her ancestry with any certainty. Since the basic information is so fleeting in these early histories, I have taken the liberty to intermix family accounts, with historically accurate events, including dates, locations & happenings. Hopefully, you will enjoy following along the trail of history, through the eyes of our immigrant family.
*NOTE: If your interested in researching your family history, try RootsWeb. Today, Ancestry.com owns RootsWeb, along with many other genealogy services. You can do some basic research for free, but any substantial information will cost you a subscription fee. (I believe they still offer a free trial period). Another source is GenWeb -a free, volunteer based genealogical research organization. Each additional category will have links to other sources as well.
